Wilderness Week
Expedition

Expedition Details

Not a tour, but an intense one-week course
designed to get you into the Alaskan backcountry and teach you the skills you need to have a great time, look for wildlife, and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

No experience is needed but this challenging trip will also provide experienced outdoors people with a lot of Alaska-specific knowledge as well as a fully supported week of backpacking in the mountains. A great way to start an adventure vacation in Alaska.

Now offered as a Fly-In adventure!

We'll use a small Alaskan bush plane to fly us, one at a time, to a remote landing strip in the Talkeetna mountains. A great opportunity to really get away from it all and experience the real Alaska.

This program is somewhat different than most of our one-week trips in that your Exposure Guides take on more of an instructor & facilitator role. The group takes on more decision making, route finding & camp chores as they gain hands-on experience.

On Day 1 we'll pick you up in Anchorage and, after a gear check, we'll head out to the Matanuska Glacier for a day of ice climbing. That evening at our Base Camp we'll gear up for an early start on our backcountry adventure the next day.

The flight in to our remote landing strip will be a highlight of your adventure.

Exact routes vary but you'll be spending 5 full days in the backcountry; carrying everything you need on your back, and traveling through forests and into alpine areas. Each day will bring new challenges and learning opportunities.

Over the course of the week you'll learn the following skills:

  • Ice Climbing
  • Backcountry navigation and route finding
  • Compass use
  • Staying warm and dry
  • Bear safety
  • River crossings
  • Camp craft
  • Meal planning and cooking
  • Wildlife observation
  • Expedition planning
  • Risk management
  • Improvising in an emergency

Challenge Level: 5; Travelling and living in potentially harsh weather. Carrying heavy loads up steep hills. Read more about Challenge Levels.

No experience required but you must be over 18 and in very good physical condition. This is an extremely remote expedition, participants should be in excellent health.

Accommodation: 5 nights primitive camping, one night at an established campground.
