Alaska employment opportunities

All Positions filled for 2013

Exposure Alaska and MICA Guides offer some of the most challenging and diverse professional guiding jobs in Alaska.

We've come a long way since our start in 1999. Each year, our crew has grown and we've expanded our operation. But our goal to be the best in the business remains our priority.

Our success over all these years is due to the hard work and professionalism of our crew.

It's not easy to get a job with us because many of our employees come back year after year. But if you're looking for a challenging summer in Alaska and have what we're looking for then we would like to hear from you.

As we've grown, we've opened up more employment opportunities and are very proud of our Internship program. In addition to our experienced professional Guides, we need Logistics Support and Apprentice Guides to make everything happen.

Exposure Alaska and MICA Guides share many aspects of their operations, including employees. Check out the website links for a complete picture of each company.

Internships

We grow our own! An internship is a great opportunity to get on board with us. Since many of our Guides return year after year, there are few openings for senior staff. We do however usually invite a couple of Interns back in a more senior role the following season.

We’re committed to providing the opportunity for a fun, educational and rewarding opportunity for our Interns. While there is a certain amount of “grunt work” for everyone in this business, we do not dump it all on our Interns.

In return for a lot of hard work, Interns get a stipend for room and board at our Base Camp, extensive training in their job, and we work hard to provide a well-rounded Alaskan experience. Interns may also get tips and many of our staff live off their tips for the summer. The monthly stipend is $450.

While many of our Interns are students completing an internship for their educational program, this is not a requirement for the job with us. We do however work closely with Interns to help them meet any school requirements.

You must be able to work with us from approximately June 1 to mid-August at a minimum.

Internship Jobs

Apprentice Guides

Do you have outdoor skills and experience but do not meet our Lead or Glacier Guide requirements? You may be an excellent candidate for Apprentice Guide (AG).

This position is an opportunity to take your existing skills in climbing, paddling and backcountry travel and learn how to use these skills to help others enjoy the outdoors.

Logistics Team

If you have strong organizational skills, a great customer service attitude and some good computer experience then you might be a candidate for our Logistics Team.

You'll be an integral part of the close-knit team, learn about the glacier, take care of guests, go ice climbing and even go along on an Exposure trip.

These Volunteer Internship positions are geared towards aspiring guides and outdoor educators. Positions are limited and there are usually more good applicants than jobs. Competitive applicants have Wilderness First Responder or other certifications, a clean driving record, and a good foundation of outdoor skills. (They should also be able to drive a manual shift vehicle!)

Once trained and "checked out", Apprentice Guides lead their own glacier hikes with clients. An AG will get a lot of experience in working with and leading groups of all types on the Matanuska Glacier.

AGs also have the opportunity to work as Assistant Guides on Exposure trips featuring sea kayaking, hiking and general backcountry travel.

These volunteer internship positions are geared towards those with an interest in the outdoors and experiencing Alaska, but who may not have the experience we're looking for in Apprentice Guides. Competitive applicants have customer service and admin experience, a clean driving record, and a good foundation of computer skills. (They should also be able to drive a manual shift vehicle.) Most LT positions are Internships.

LT Interns get our same basic glacier training, but may also learn to use our reservations system, operate our zipline, conduct jet boat tours, manage the espresso business, schedule our staff or prepate a dinner for 20 guests.

LT Interns will also get the opportunity for a sea kayaking trip in Prince William Sound.

"There was enough to take care of food and extra gear purchases, pay for airfare, and still put a little in the bank when I got home(thanks to a very nice bonus). So, I think financially it was better than expected. I don't think I can put a monetary value on all the amazing things I was able to learn and experience while surrounded by breathtaking scenery."

Lifestyle

Summer in Alaska means working and playing hard.
Within a fifteen mile radius, you can explore a glacier, ice climb, rock climb, whitewater kayak, climb mountains, hike and bike....after a full day of work that is. Our staff average one day a week off and typically work from late May through early September.

But "work" means trekking and climbing on the glacier, kayaking in Prince William Sound, hiking in the mountains or rafting on the rivers. (As well as buying and packing food, taking care of gear, cleaning the van...the list is long!)

Most Guides live in their own tent set up at our Glacier Base Camp. Our camp features wireless internet, bouldering wall, and communal kitchen. Showers are available at nearby lodges.
