Don & Tina on Ice

The ultimate winter camping trip

Dropped off by 2 helicopters in the middle of nowhere, on a glacier in Antarctica.

We're camping out here for 4 months...building and maintaining an emergency runway, dealing with the wind, and staying sane...it's just the two of us!

We're about 130 miles from the main U.S. station at McMurdo. Our blue-ice glacier is usually clear of snow (due to the wind), and relatively smooth. A perfect place to go if McMurdo has bad weather and your Hercules is running out of fuel.

Our kitchen & "living room".

Odell Glacier, 130 Miles from McMurdo, a mile high
-26C (-28F) The first couple of weeks.
The high so far has been -8C (16F). Often sunny, VERY often windy.

We started out living in tents but have improved a lot with the construction of a little hut that won't blow away.
It's fairly comfortable but no showers for up to 7 weeks!

Wildlife: not so much as a fly!

Our new digs, the exact size and shape of our shed at home!

Shannon the mechanic, one of our few visitors.

"I wouldn't want to spend 24 hours out there."

--Our big, BIG Boss. Overheard after a short visit to our camp site. Guess he didn't like the -80 degree windchill.
